BROADVIEW HEIGHTS – Early this morning Brecksville – Broadview Heights Athletic Director Dan Kalinsky confirmed strong rumors that Dan Irving has been formally announced as the next head volleyball coach of the Lady Bees.
Irving, 25, has spent the last four seasons as a coach in the Bees program. He was head freshman coach for two years and then head junior varsity coach.
Brecksville long has had a tradition of promoting coaches from within and Irving, a Stow resident, is no exception to that philosophy.
Irving replaces Rob Cline who guided the Bees to a 58-17 overall record in three years at the helm on Mill Road. He led Brecksville to a Final Four appearance in 2008 and to a Southwestern Conference title last year. Two of Cline’s three teams advanced to the Sweet 16 level in Division I.
Cline tendered his resignation nearly two weeks ago. The hiring of Irving came quick and that’s what the Bees needed. Their first match is August 28.
Cline will become an assistant coach at Kent State University beginning August 2. “It’s time for Danny Irving to write the next chapter in Lady Bees volleyball history.” Cline, a vocal supporter for Irving to be promoted from within, said last week.
“Coach Irving got the complete backing of the kids and that’s important.” Kalinsky said. “And Coach Cline has always had aspirations to coach at the college level. I’m glad for Rob.”
Irving, a true teacher of the game, is known for his fun-loving demeanor off the court. His game day intensity became his trademark as the junior varsity head coach.
Irving also coaches the boy’s volleyball team at BBHHS. It is believed that he will continue to coach both teams as the boy’s compete in the spring.
PENN STATE CAMP UPDATE:
“The Penn State Camp was good and the girl’s played well.” Cline said of his last official duty as head coach of the program that he had built to state level prominence. “We finished seventh out of 40 teams there. That’s a pretty good showing considering that we didn’t have The Whale or The Big O.”
Cline was referring to senior outside hitter Olivia Chrzanowski and junior middle hitter Abbie Brinkman. The Big O was vacationing with her family in Myrtle Beach, SC. Brinkman was with a high level national J.O. club team at a nationwide tournament in Wisconsin.
There was no word on whether Chrzanowski got in any beach volleyball during her stay in The Palmetto State.

WEDDING BELLS:
A milestone has been reached. You know that you are getting old when you are invited to a former players wedding.
Laurel Maurer, a three-sport standout for the Lady Bees in the mid-1990′s, will be married on August 28th.
Laurel is the daughter of Rich and Joyce Maurer of Broadview Heights. Mr. Maurer, who coaches at the middle school level for boy’s basketball, is also a familiar sight working the scorers tables at boys and girls home basketball games.
Laurel has the dubious distinction of being the first Lady Bee athlete that I ever interviewed. That was after a Lady Bee basketball game in 1996 at the old Bee Hive. We still laugh to this day as to whom was more nervous during the sixty second taped interview, her or I.
Congratulations Laurel on your big day.
Please stay tuned to this website as we get closer to the Lady Bees opener on Saturday, August 28. That will be a non-conference home match against Copley at the fabulous Bee Hive in the afternoon.
See You At The Bee Hive!
